12/02/2008 - Winnipeg, MB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have named Mike Kelly their new head coach.
Kelly was the offensive coordinator for the Blue Bombers from 1992 through 1996 and was part of teams that captured three regular-season division titles and appeared in the Grey Cup twice.
"Some people want to be a head coach. I've always wanted to be the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers," said Kelly, a native of Waterbury, Connecticut. "When I told my two daughters, who were both born at the St. Boniface hospital, that I was becoming the head coach in Winnipeg, they both said 'Dad, this is your dream job.' It really is."
Kelly spent the 2008 season as the receivers coach with the Edmonton Eskimos after five years away from the sideline.
Following his stint with Winnipeg in the mid-1990s, Kelly spent three years as the head coach at Valdosta State University. He also worked for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins as a coach, scout or assistant in personnel from 2001 through 2005.
"Mike's experience, passion and track record made him an ideal candidate for this job," said Lyle Bauer, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. "He has always said to me that his ideal job is to be head coach of this team. And that has become a reality."
The Bombers needed a replacement for Doug Berry, who was fired last month after three seasons. The Bombers were 27-26-1 under Berry, including 8-10 this past season.
