08/17/2008 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Johan Santana pitched his second complete game and first shutout of the season as the Mets continued a stretch of road dominance with their sixth straight win, topping Pittsburgh, 4-0 in the third installment of a four-game series from PNC Park.
Santana (11-7) allowed just three hits and no walks while fanning seven. The crafty lefty has allowed three runs or less in each of his last six starts and hasn't lost since a June 28 setback to the crosstown-rival Yankees.
Brian Schneider knocked in three with a two-run home run and an RBI single, while Carlos Beltran hit a solo shot and scored twice for the Mets, who have won nine of 11 to take a 2 1/2 game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. The Phillies play later Sunday at San Diego. New York remains a perfect 6-0 on their current seven-game road trip.
The Mets also made an effort to bolster a struggling bullpen Sunday with the acquisition of right-handed reliever Luis Ayala from the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later, which is expected to be infielder Anderson Hernandez. This comes on the heels of sobering news regarding Mets closer Billy Wagner, who will not return to the Mets bullpen Monday as expected. Wagner, recovering from a left forearm strain, threw a simulated game at PNC Park Saturday and experienced stiffness in his left elbow. He will return to New York on Sunday to have the arm further examined.
Jeff Karstens (2-2) dropped his second straight start, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk while fanning three. The right-hander has pitched well since joining the Pirates as part of a six-player trade with the Yankees. Karstens won his first two starts for the Bucs with 15.0 scoreless innings in those outings against the Chicago Cubs followed by a two-hit shutout at Arizona.
Pittsburgh managed just three hits, including two singles from Jack Wilson, as the club dropped its fifth game in the last six.
New York got on the board in the second courtesy of a two-run homer from Schneider. Daniel Murphy drew a lead-off walk before Schneider cranked an 0-2 fastball out to the seats in right.
Schneider again came through in the fourth with a two-out RBI single down the right field line. Beltran hustled home after starting the inning with a single, and gave the Mets a four-run cushion with his 17th home run of the season leading off the sixth.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
